Why it matters to a buyer
A single, one-off search in ChatGPT proves very little on its own, since the same question can return a different answer minutes later, with different sources cited; prompt tracking is what turns those individual, noisy snapshots into a trend a buyer can actually act on. It is also the closest equivalent AI search has to rank tracking in traditional SEO, and it matters for a simple reason: without it, an agency's claims about AI visibility are anecdotal rather than measured.
How it is measured or applied
A prompt list is built from real buyer language, questions someone genuinely deciding between options would ask, rather than SEO keywords reworded as questions, and run against each target assistant on a fixed schedule using either a dedicated GEO tracking tool or manual, logged searches for a smaller list. Each run records whether the brand was cited with a link, mentioned without one, or absent, alongside which competitors appeared and which sources the answer drew from. Reporting tracks the trend across weeks and months, since AI answers vary run to run and a single data point is not reliable evidence of movement.
