Why it matters to a buyer
Traditional rankings and AI visibility do not move together: a page can rank first on Google and still be missed entirely by ChatGPT or Perplexity, because each assistant retrieves from its own index and weighs different kinds of sources, with overlap between engines running as low as roughly a tenth in independent studies. For a buyer, this means an SEO report showing strong rankings is not evidence of AI visibility, and a program built only around Google rankings can be entirely blind to a real and growing channel.
How it is measured or applied
AI visibility is measured by running a fixed set of realistic buyer prompts against each engine on a schedule, since a single run is noisy, and recording whether the brand is mentioned, cited with a link, and how it is described relative to competitors. Because each engine draws on different sources, ChatGPT and Perplexity lean on reviews, listicles and forums more than a brand's own site, improving it means building presence on the specific third-party sources each engine already trusts, not just publishing more on-site content. Progress is tracked as a trend across engines over months, not a single snapshot.
