GEO and AI search

AI citation

An AI citation is a link or named source that an AI assistant attaches to its answer to show where a statement came from. A brand can be cited, which means its page is linked as a source, or merely mentioned, which means its name appears in the answer without a link to its site.

Also called: AI source link

Why it matters to a buyer

A citation is the part of an AI answer that can send a visitor to your site and that lets a reader check the claim. A mention without a citation still shapes what the buyer thinks of you, but it sends no traffic and you cannot see it in analytics. Knowing the difference stops a report from counting every appearance as a win: an agency should say how many answers linked to you, how many only named you, and which other pages were linked instead.

How it is measured or applied

Citations are measured by running a fixed list of buyer prompts in each assistant with web search on, then recording every cited URL and every brand named. Repeating the run on a schedule shows movement, because a single run varies from one attempt to the next. On the site, the pages that tend to earn citations answer a question directly, carry specific facts and dates, and are easy for the assistant's crawler to reach. Off the site, citations often go to review platforms, directories and lists, so appearing accurately on those is part of the work.
