Rank tracking

Rank tracking is the practice of regularly recording a site's search ranking position for a defined list of target keywords, using a dedicated tool that performs automated searches, to monitor movement over time. It is distinct from Search Console's average position, which reflects real searcher variation rather than a fixed check.

Also called: keyword rank tracking, position tracking

Why it matters to a buyer

Rank tracking gives a buyer a clean, direct answer to "are we ranking better for the terms we actually care about," which a blended traffic or impressions number cannot answer as precisely, since it isolates specific target keywords rather than everything a site happens to show up for. It matters to check how a tool simulates a search, since rankings vary by location, device and personalisation, and a tracked position that does not account for that can differ noticeably from what a real customer actually sees.

How it is measured or applied

A rank tracking tool runs automated searches for a defined keyword list on a schedule, usually daily or weekly, recording position, URL and often SERP features present, from a specified location and device to keep results comparable over time. It is applied by tracking a focused list of commercially important terms rather than every keyword a site could conceivably rank for, and reviewed alongside actual Search Console click and impression data for those same terms, since a tracked position and real searcher behaviour can diverge, particularly on queries where SERP features are common.
