Unlinked brand mention

An unlinked brand mention is an instance of a business's name appearing on another website, or in an AI assistant's answer, without a hyperlink back to the business's own site. It still shapes reputation and how a brand is described, but it sends no direct traffic and carries no measurable link value.

Also called: unlinked mention, brand mention

Why it matters to a buyer

In AI search specifically, an unlinked mention can matter more than it ever did for ordinary SEO, because an assistant's answer can name a brand as a recommendation with no link at all, and that mention still directly shapes what the reader who asked the question thinks, even though it shows up nowhere in a backlink report. A buyer relying only on backlink tools to measure brand presence is missing this entire category, which is exactly why AI visibility needs its own tracking method, not a repurposed link report.

How it is measured or applied

Unlinked mentions are found by monitoring the web and AI assistant answers for brand name appearances, using a media monitoring tool for the open web and prompt tracking for AI-generated mentions specifically, then recording sentiment and context alongside frequency. Some can be converted into genuine backlinks through outreach asking a site to add a link to an existing mention, though many, especially inside an AI-generated answer, cannot be converted at all and are simply worth measuring and influencing on their own terms, through the same accurate, consistent, third-party presence that supports any brand mention.
