Why it matters to a buyer
Buyers increasingly ask an assistant before they open a results page, and the assistant answers with a short list of names. If your company is not in the sources the engine retrieves, you are not in the answer, however well your own site ranks. GEO is how a business earns a place in those answers rather than hoping for one. It sits on top of search engine optimization rather than replacing it: most engines still retrieve from a web index, so a page that cannot be crawled or ranked is rarely cited.
How it is measured or applied
GEO is applied on two sides. On your own site it means crawler access for the AI bots, short answers near the top of each page, clear headings, tables and consistent structured data. Off your site it means making your business facts match across the directories, review platforms and lists that engines already quote. It is measured by running a fixed set of buyer prompts in each engine on a schedule and recording whether you are mentioned, whether you are linked, and which sources the engine cited instead. The term was coined in a 2023 research paper that tested which page changes raised visibility in generated answers.
