GEO and AI search

Google AI Mode

Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience inside Google Search that answers a question with an AI-generated response, lets the user ask follow-ups, and cites web pages as sources. Unlike AI Overviews, which sit on a normal results page, AI Mode replaces the list of links with the conversation.

Also called: AI Mode

Why it matters to a buyer

In AI Mode the searcher may never see a traditional list of results, so the only way to be visible is to be one of the cited sources or to be named in the answer. Follow-up questions also mean a buyer can narrow from a broad question to a shortlist without leaving the conversation. For a business, that makes being cited on the comparison and evaluation questions more valuable than ranking for a single head term.

How it is measured or applied

Google describes AI Mode as using a query fan-out technique: it splits a question into subtopics and runs many searches at once, then assembles the answer from what it retrieves. That rewards sites whose pages each answer one sub-question clearly, rather than one long page that answers everything loosely. Applying it means mapping the follow-up questions a buyer asks, making sure a page on your site answers each one, and keeping those pages crawlable by Googlebot. Measurement is a tracked set of prompts run in AI Mode on a schedule, recording citations and mentions, alongside Search Console data.
