What Is Google AI Mode? How It Works
Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience that breaks one question into several underlying searches and returns a synthesized, sourced answer.
Google AI Mode is a conversational search experience that lets a person ask a longer, multi-part question and get back a synthesized answer built from several underlying searches instead of one ranked list. Rather than returning ten links, it breaks the question apart, searches for each piece, and writes a combined response with sources attached.
It is closely related to two other entries worth knowing — see the AI search glossary for how it connects to AI Overviews and LLMO.
What is Google AI Mode, in plain terms?
AI Mode is a mode inside Google Search that a person switches into deliberately, built for questions that need more than one search to answer well — comparisons, multi-step research, anything with several moving parts. Google introduced it as an expansion of its earlier AI Overviews work, aimed specifically at longer, more complex queries [1].
The searcher experience looks like a conversation: ask a question, get a synthesized answer with sources, then ask a follow-up that AI Mode treats with the context of what was already discussed. That back-and-forth is the main thing that separates it from a single AI Overview box sitting above ordinary results.
It is worth being clear about what AI Mode is not. It is not a new, separate index a site has to be added to, and it is not a chatbot with a fixed knowledge cutoff answering from memory. Every answer traces back to live searches against the same index that normal Search already uses, run in the moment the question is asked rather than pre-generated.
How does it differ from AI Overviews and regular Search?
All three sit on the same foundation — Google's Search index — and differ mainly in how many searches happen behind the scenes and how much the searcher has opted in.
| Feature | Searches run | Searcher's role |
|---|---|---|
| Regular results | One search, ranked list returned | Scans links, picks one to click |
| AI Overviews | One search, summarized inline | Reads a box above the normal results |
| AI Mode | Several searches per question | Opts in, converses, asks follow-ups |
That difference in searches-per-question is not cosmetic. Because AI Mode issues multiple underlying queries, a page can be relevant to only one piece of a larger question and still get pulled into the final answer — something a single, one-shot search would be far less likely to surface.
The opt-in part matters for measurement too. A brand can be doing everything right for regular Search and AI Overviews and still have no visibility data for AI Mode simply because the audience asking AI Mode-style questions is smaller and self-selected — people who specifically want a longer, researched answer rather than a quick link.
What is "query fan-out" and why does it matter here?
Query fan-out is the technique behind AI Mode's multiple searches: instead of running one query for a complex question, the system breaks the question into sub-questions, searches for each separately, and combines the results into one answer [1]. A question about "the best approach for a mid-size B2B company" might quietly become several searches — one for definitions, one for comparisons, one for pricing — each pulling from a different slice of the index.
Fan-out changes what 'ranking for a keyword' even means. The question that gets asked and the searches that actually run behind it are no longer the same thing, so we now track the sub-queries a topic tends to break into, not just the headline phrase.
For the mechanics of fan-out in more depth, what is query fan-out walks through how the sub-queries actually get chosen.
How do you make a site visible inside AI Mode?
Start with the same base every AI feature needs: a page that is indexed, fast and reachable by Google's crawlers, since AI Mode's sub-queries draw from that same ranked pool. From there, write pages that each answer one specific sub-question completely rather than one page trying to cover a whole broad topic loosely — that structure matches how fan-out actually searches.
Mapping the sub-questions a topic tends to break into is the extra step this feature adds on top of ordinary keyword research. Instead of one target phrase, treat a broad topic as a cluster of narrower ones — pricing, timeline, comparison, risk — and make sure each has its own clearly answered page rather than one page trying to touch all of them briefly.
The underlying discipline connects back to two other terms worth knowing: what are AI Overviews covers the simpler, single-search version of this same idea, and what is LLMO covers the model-level framing that AI Mode's synthesis step also depends on.
Questions people also ask
Is AI Mode replacing regular Google search?
Not entirely, and not yet for most queries. It sits alongside normal Search as a mode a searcher chooses, for questions that benefit from a longer, multi-part conversation rather than a list of links.
Does AI Mode use a different index than normal Search?
No. It draws on the same underlying Search index and many of the same ranking systems, then issues several searches against that index per question instead of one, and synthesizes the results into a conversational answer.
Do I need to write differently for AI Mode specifically?
Not as a separate project. The same habits that help AI Overviews and AEO — clear, self-contained answers, real facts stated plainly, a crawlable page — are what a fan-out sub-query is looking for too.
Can a page rank in AI Mode without ranking in normal search?
It is unlikely. AI Mode's sub-queries pull from the same ranked index normal Search uses, so a page invisible to ordinary Search is very unlikely to surface inside any of AI Mode's underlying searches either.
How is AI Mode different from a plain chatbot?
A chatbot with no search access answers from what it was trained on. AI Mode issues live searches for each part of a question, so its answer is grounded in current, indexed web pages rather than a fixed training snapshot.
