Why it matters to a buyer
Fan-out means a single buyer question can pull sources from dozens of searches the buyer never typed. A page does not have to rank for the original question to be cited; it has to be the best answer to one of the sub-questions. For a business, that shifts the plan from chasing one head term to covering the specific questions a buyer asks along the way, such as cost, timeline, alternatives and how to choose.
How it is measured or applied
Applying it starts with listing the sub-questions a system is likely to generate for your most valuable queries, using People Also Ask boxes, related searches and the follow-ups assistants suggest. Each sub-question then needs a clear, self-contained answer somewhere on the site, under a heading that names it. Google does not show which fan-out searches it ran, so measurement is indirect: track the set of sub-question queries in Search Console and run the main questions in AI Mode on a schedule to see which of your pages are cited.
