Grounding (AI search)

Grounding is connecting an AI model's response to real, current external sources, usually live search results, at the moment it answers, rather than relying only on facts it memorised during training. A grounded answer typically carries citations, and is generally more accurate and current than an ungrounded one.

Also called: grounded generation

Why it matters to a buyer

Grounded answers hallucinate less and stay current in a way a model's frozen training data cannot, since training data has a cutoff date but grounding pulls in whatever is live on the web right now, which is exactly why a business's current pricing, hours or offerings are more likely to be represented accurately in a grounded answer than in one drawn only from what a model happened to absorb during training. A buyer's content strategy should specifically target the grounded, retrieval-based route, since that is the part of an answer engine's behaviour that content published today can actually influence.

How it is measured or applied

Grounding works by running a search at the moment of the query, retrieving a set of current pages, and generating a response constrained to reflect what those pages actually say, with citations pointing back to them. Content earns inclusion in grounded answers the same way it earns any AI citation: by being crawlable, directly answering the likely underlying question, and carrying clear, checkable facts. It is observed indirectly, since no vendor publishes which specific searches fed a given grounded answer, so tracking relies on running prompts with web search enabled and recording which sources get cited.
