Answer engine optimization (AEO)

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that search features and AI assistants can lift a direct answer from it, whether that answer appears as a featured snippet, a voice assistant reply, a People Also Ask box or a cited sentence inside an AI-generated summary.

Also called: AEO

Why it matters to a buyer

An answer that is quoted on the results page, or read aloud, is often the only part of your content a buyer sees. AEO is how you make that quoted passage yours and accurate, rather than a competitor's or a directory's. For a buyer comparing agencies, the useful point is that AEO and GEO overlap heavily: the same short, well-structured answer serves a snippet, an assistant and an AI summary, so paying twice for the same work under two labels is worth questioning.

How it is measured or applied

In practice AEO means phrasing headings as the questions people actually ask, answering each one in the first two or three sentences below it, and keeping those sentences self-contained so they still make sense when quoted alone. Lists and tables help where the answer is a set of steps or a comparison. Google states that no special markup is needed to appear in its AI features beyond normal eligibility for search. Progress is measured by the snippets, question boxes and AI citations a page wins for its target questions, tracked over time in rank tracking and prompt tracking tools.
