Google Analytics 4 (GA4)

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is Google's current web and app analytics platform. It records visits as events, such as page views, scrolls, form submissions and purchases, and lets you mark the events that matter as key events so you can see which channels and pages produce leads or sales.

Also called: GA4, Google Analytics

Why it matters to a buyer

GA4 is where search work is connected to outcomes. Search Console says how many people clicked; GA4 says what they did next, and whether organic visitors became enquiries. For a buyer, an agency that reports rankings without GA4 key events is reporting activity rather than results. It is also where visits from AI assistants show up as referrals, so it is the first place to look for AI traffic.

How it is measured or applied

Setting it up well means defining the key events that represent value, such as a booked call, a submitted form or a purchase, and checking they fire once and only once. Traffic is read by channel, with organic search separated from paid, and by landing page. A custom channel group or exploration can separate referrals from AI assistants by their source domains. Consent settings and ad blockers mean GA4 undercounts, so trends matter more than exact totals, and figures are cross-checked against Search Console and your CRM.
