Conversion funnel

A conversion funnel is the sequence of steps a visitor moves through on the way to a goal, such as landing page, product page, cart, checkout, confirmation, with a smaller number of people completing each successive step. Its name reflects the narrowing count of visitors at each stage.

Also called: sales funnel, purchase funnel

Why it matters to a buyer

Looking only at an overall conversion rate hides where in the journey visitors are actually being lost, and a funnel view is what turns "conversion rate is low" into an actionable finding, such as "sixty percent of the loss happens between adding to cart and starting checkout." For a buyer, a funnel breakdown is the difference between a CRO plan that guesses at what to fix and one that targets the specific step losing the most people relative to how close they already were to converting.

How it is measured or applied

A funnel is built by defining each meaningful step toward the goal and tracking how many visitors complete each one in sequence, most commonly set up as a funnel exploration in GA4 or an equivalent report in the platform's own analytics. The step with the largest percentage drop-off, weighted by how far along visitors already were, is usually the highest-priority place to investigate first, using session recordings and heatmaps to understand why visitors are leaving at that specific point before proposing a fix. Improvements are validated by watching whether that step's completion rate moves after a change.
