Why it matters to a buyer
An answer engine changes the shape of the opportunity: instead of competing for one of ten blue links, a business is competing to be one of a handful of sources an answer synthesises, or to be named directly inside the generated text with no link at all. For a buyer, this means the old measure of success, a top-ten ranking, does not map cleanly onto answer engines, where being accurately described inside the answer can matter more than holding any specific position.
How it is measured or applied
Answer engines are built on retrieval, running searches against a live or recent index, and generation, writing a response from what was retrieved, sometimes with citations and sometimes without. Being cited well means having content that answers a specific question directly and early, in a form the engine's retrieval step can pull cleanly, plus presence on the third-party sources that engine already trusts for that category. It is monitored by running a consistent set of buyer questions across each answer engine on a schedule and recording citations, mentions and accuracy over time.
