SERP feature

A SERP feature is any element on a search results page beyond the standard list of blue links, such as a featured snippet, People Also Ask box, local pack, image carousel or AI Overview. Their presence changes how much space and attention ordinary organic results receive on that query.

Also called: SERP features

Why it matters to a buyer

Which SERP features appear on a query changes what winning that query actually looks like: a page ranking first below a large AI Overview, image carousel and PAA box may still see far fewer clicks than the same ranking position on a query with no extra features at all. For a buyer, a report built only around position, without noting which features are present, can overstate the value of a first-place ranking on a feature-heavy query.

How it is measured or applied

SERP features present on a given query are checked by searching it directly and recording what appears, or, at scale, with a rank tracking tool that logs SERP features alongside position for every tracked keyword. A site's strategy is then matched to the features actually present on its target queries: structured data and direct answers for featured snippets and PAA, a strong Google Business Profile for a local pack, clear, extractable content for AI Overviews. Progress is tracked by watching both ranking position and, separately, how much of the page real estate the site captures.
