Parametric knowledge

Parametric knowledge is the factual and linguistic knowledge an AI model has encoded internally in its parameters during training, as opposed to knowledge it retrieves live from an external source at the moment it answers. It is fixed at the model's training cutoff and does not update on its own.

Also called: model memory

Why it matters to a buyer

A brand can be described accurately from a model's parametric knowledge, if it was well covered before training, or barely known at all, if it launched or changed significantly since, and no amount of publishing today changes what a specific already-released model absorbed during its training run. For a buyer, this is why influence over parametric knowledge is necessarily slow and indirect, achieved by being consistently and accurately covered ahead of whenever future models are next trained, while faster, more controllable influence comes through the retrieval route instead.

How it is measured or applied

Parametric knowledge cannot be edited directly by an outside business; it can only be shaped by ensuring accurate, consistent, widely corroborated information exists across the web well before a future model's training cutoff, so that whatever a future model absorbs about the brand is correct. In the meantime, current gaps or errors in parametric knowledge are worked around by making retrieval and grounding work well, since a grounded answer overrides stale or missing parametric knowledge with live, current sources. It is assessed by testing a model with web search turned off, where the product allows it, to see what the model states from memory alone.
