Zero-click search rate

Zero-click search rate is the share of searches that end without the searcher clicking through to any website, because the answer was shown on the results page itself, in an AI summary, a featured snippet, a knowledge panel or a map listing, or because the searcher refined the query instead.

Also called: zero-click searches, no-click searches

Why it matters to a buyer

A rising zero-click rate means impressions can climb while clicks fall, which looks like a failing campaign in a report built only on traffic. Research from Pew in 2025 found users were less likely to click a result when an AI summary appeared. For a buyer, the point is that visibility and traffic have separated: being named or cited in the answer now has value of its own, and a report should show both rather than traffic alone.

How it is measured or applied

No search engine publishes a zero-click rate for your site, so it is inferred. In Search Console, falling click-through rate at a steady average position on a query usually means a feature above the results is answering it. Rank tracking tools record which queries show an AI Overview, snippet or panel. The practical response is to target the queries where a click is still needed, such as comparisons, pricing and local decisions, and to earn citations inside the answers where clicks are unlikely.
