Shopify

Shopify is a hosted ecommerce platform used to build and run online stores, providing built-in checkout, payments and hosting. Its SEO has known platform-level constraints, such as a fixed URL structure for products and collections, that a site cannot fully customise the way an open, self-hosted platform can.

Why it matters to a buyer

Shopify handles a lot of ecommerce infrastructure well out of the box, hosting, checkout security, uptime, but its SEO has real, platform-level limits a buyer should know before committing: URL structure for products and collections is fixed by the platform and cannot be fully customised, and duplicate content from collection and filter combinations is a common, recurring issue on larger catalogues. Evaluating a Shopify store's SEO health means checking these known constraints specifically, not assuming general SEO advice built for open platforms applies identically.

How it is measured or applied

Shopify SEO is applied within the platform's constraints: managing canonical tags and duplicate collection URLs deliberately, since the platform generates several ways to reach the same product, optimising the robots.txt.liquid template where the platform allows edits, adding structured data through the theme or an app, and controlling page speed through image optimisation and careful app and script management, since third-party apps are a common cause of slow Shopify stores. It is audited with a standard site crawler adapted to Shopify's known URL patterns, and monitored through Search Console for the duplicate content and indexing issues that recur on the platform.
