On-page SEO

On-page SEO is everything a site controls directly on its own pages to help them rank: content quality, title tags, headings, internal links, structured data, page speed and mobile usability. It is contrasted with off-page SEO, which covers signals earned from other sites, like backlinks and mentions.

Also called: on-site SEO

Why it matters to a buyer

On-page SEO is the part of the work a buyer can see and verify directly, since every element lives on the site itself rather than depending on another site's cooperation, which makes it a reasonable place to start any audit. It is also foundational rather than optional: strong backlinks pointing at a thin, poorly structured page rarely produce lasting rankings, because on-page quality is what determines whether a search engine and a reader judge the page worth ranking once it has earned attention.

How it is measured or applied

It is applied by writing content that genuinely answers the query's intent, using clear title tags and headings that describe the page accurately, structuring internal links so related pages support each other, adding relevant structured data, and keeping page speed and mobile usability within acceptable limits. It is audited with a site crawler that checks titles, headings, internal links and technical elements at scale, and improvements are tracked through Search Console's performance report, watching whether rankings and click-through rate move after specific on-page changes.
