OAI-SearchBot

OAI-SearchBot is the crawler OpenAI uses specifically to build the search index that powers ChatGPT search results and citations. It is distinct from GPTBot, which collects data for model training, and from ChatGPT-User, which fetches a page live when a user's action in ChatGPT requires it.

Also called: OpenAI SearchBot

Why it matters to a buyer

Of OpenAI's crawlers, this is the one that most directly determines whether a page can be cited in ChatGPT search results: blocking OAI-SearchBot while allowing GPTBot means a page can still help train future models but cannot appear as a live, cited source in ChatGPT's search feature today. For a buyer specifically trying to earn ChatGPT citations, confirming this exact crawler is allowed, and not silently blocked by a firewall default, is a foundational, easily overlooked check.

How it is measured or applied

The crawler is named explicitly in robots.txt and allowed on the paths a business wants indexed for ChatGPT search, checked alongside firewall and CDN bot-management settings that can block it even when robots.txt permits it. OpenAI publishes the bot's user agent string and IP ranges so a firewall can verify a request is genuinely OAI-SearchBot rather than a spoofed one. Access is confirmed through server log review, looking specifically for OAI-SearchBot requests and their response codes, since there is no Search Console equivalent for OpenAI's crawl activity.
