Long-tail keyword

A long-tail keyword is a longer, more specific search phrase, such as "best waterproof running shoes for flat feet," that gets less search volume individually than a broad term like "running shoes" but is usually easier to rank for and converts better because it matches a clearer intent.

Also called: long tail search terms

Why it matters to a buyer

A newer or smaller site chasing only high-volume, broad terms is usually competing against sites with far more existing authority, while the same site can realistically win specific, long-tail terms much sooner, and visitors arriving through them tend to convert better because their intent is narrower and clearer. A buyer should expect an early-stage content plan to lean heavily on long-tail terms, building topical depth and authority before broader terms become realistic, rather than starting at the top of the funnel.

How it is measured or applied

Long-tail terms are found by expanding a seed keyword through autocomplete suggestions, People Also Ask questions, related searches, and a keyword tool's "questions" or "long tail" filters, then grouped by shared intent so one page can target a cluster rather than one phrase each. Because individual search volume is low, performance is judged in aggregate, total organic traffic and conversions across a cluster of long-tail pages, and in Search Console's query report, which reveals the specific long-tail phrases already bringing in impressions and clicks even where a page targets a broader head term.
