Core update

A core update is a broad change Google makes to its main ranking systems, rolled out several times a year and announced publicly, that can move rankings across many sites and topics at once. It is not a penalty aimed at any one site; it reflects Google reassessing relevance and quality broadly.

Also called: Google core algorithm update

Why it matters to a buyer

A core update can move a business's rankings sharply in either direction without any manual action ever appearing in Search Console, which confuses buyers used to thinking of ranking drops as a specific, fixable error. It matters because Google is explicit that there is no fixed checklist to "recover" from one; what helps is the same durable work, useful content, real expertise, a good user experience, that the update was designed to reward, sustained over months rather than a quick patch.

How it is measured or applied

A drop is first confirmed as core-update-related by lining up the date of the traffic change against Google's published list of update rollout dates, since the same-week timing is the main evidence. From there, the site is compared honestly against what ranks well for its queries now: whether competitors offer more depth, better evidence of experience, or a clearer answer. Recovery is tracked over the following months in Search Console's performance report by query and page, since Google has said recovery is not guaranteed on any set timeline and depends on genuine improvement, not resubmission.
