Shopify URL structure, explained
Shopify fixes /products/, /collections/ and /blogs/ into every URL and will not let you remove them. Here is what that means and when it is worth a redirect.
Shopify fixes /products/, /collections/, /pages/ and /blogs/ into every store's URLs, and there is no setting to remove them. The part you do control is the handle after the prefix, and that is where product renames, migrations and collection-scoped duplicates actually cause SEO problems.
Getting URL structure right is one input into a wider Shopify SEO strategy — it rarely moves rankings on its own, but a careless handle change without a redirect can lose rankings a page already earned.
What does a fixed URL prefix actually mean?
It means every product URL looks like example.com/products/handle, every collection like example.com/collections/handle, and there is no theme setting, app or Plus-tier feature that removes the folder name [1]. This is different from a self-hosted platform like WooCommerce, where the permalink structure is fully configurable.
In practice this rarely matters for SEO. Search engines have ranked Shopify stores with these prefixes for over a decade; the prefix is a minor readability detail, not a signal search engines weigh. Where it does matter is expectation-setting: a team migrating from a platform with custom permalinks needs to know upfront that matching the old URL pattern exactly is not possible, so the redirect plan has to map old URLs to Shopify's fixed pattern instead of trying to preserve it.
| URL part | Who controls it |
|---|---|
| /products/, /collections/, /pages/, /blogs/ | Fixed by Shopify — not editable |
| The handle after the prefix | You — set at creation, editable after with a redirect |
| Collection-scoped product path | Generated automatically when linked through a collection |
What is a collection-scoped product URL, and is it a duplicate?
It is the URL Shopify generates when a product is reached by clicking through a collection: example.com/collections/collection-handle/products/handle, rather than the standalone example.com/products/handle. Both render the same product page, which makes this the platform's single most common built-in duplicate-content pattern.
Google's own guidance on consolidating duplicate URLs is the standard reference here: a correct canonical tag tells search engines which version to index, and the rest resolve as intentional variants rather than competing pages [2].
The same pattern shows up on the homepage template and any custom index-style page a theme generates [3]. If a template can be reached through more than one path — a collection link, a menu link, a search result — check that every path resolves to the same canonical URL rather than assuming the theme already handles it.
When is changing a product handle worth the risk?
When the current handle actively hurts usability or clarity — a handle auto-generated from a long title, a leftover SKU string, or a name that no longer matches the product. Renaming for a marginal SEO gain, with no functional reason, is rarely worth disturbing a URL that already ranks.
If you do rename, set up a 301 redirect from the old handle to the new one before the change goes live, not after. Shopify does not redirect automatically when you edit a handle, and any inbound link, bookmark or indexed result pointing at the old URL becomes a dead end without one.
How does this connect to a platform migration?
Directly, and at much higher stakes. A full migration to Shopify means every URL on the old platform needs a mapped redirect to its new, fixed-prefix Shopify equivalent, and the volume of that mapping is usually the single riskiest part of the move. A one-page handle rename is a small, contained version of the same problem a full migration faces at scale.
The same logic applies to collection page SEO: a collection's handle change carries every product-scoped URL under it along for the ride, multiplying the redirect count. Plan handle changes on collections with particular care for that reason.
Does URL structure affect what a Shopify SEO programme costs?
Only indirectly, through the size of the redirect and cleanup work it creates. A stable store with unchanged handles has effectively no URL structure cost. A store mid-migration, or one renaming handles across a large catalog, adds real scoped work to a project — which is one of the variables in Shopify SEO pricing that a fixed quote given before an audit cannot account for.
Questions people also ask
Can you remove /products/ from a Shopify product URL?
No. The prefix is fixed by the platform and cannot be edited or removed on Shopify or Shopify Plus, unlike a self-hosted platform where the URL structure is fully configurable.
Does the fixed URL prefix hurt Shopify SEO?
Not meaningfully. Search engines rank pages on content and authority, not on whether a URL contains a folder name. The prefix is a minor readability question, not a ranking one.
Can you change a Shopify product handle after launch?
Yes, but every existing link, bookmark and indexed URL pointing at the old handle needs a 301 redirect to the new one, or you lose whatever ranking and traffic that URL had built.
What is the difference between a product URL and a collection-scoped product URL on Shopify?
A standalone product URL is /products/handle. A collection-scoped version, /collections/collection-handle/products/handle, is generated automatically when a product is reached through a collection and is functionally a duplicate of the standalone URL unless canonicalized correctly.
