How much does SEO cost?
Published benchmarks put SEO at $1,000 to $5,000 a month, $75 to $200 an hour and $500 to $5,000 a project. What sits behind each band and what moves it.
Published benchmarks put SEO at $1,000 to $5,000 a month for an ongoing retainer, $75 to $200 an hour for consulting, and $500 to $5,000 for a one-off project [1]. The band you land in is decided by how competitive your market is, how big your site is, and how much of the fee pays for making things.
What does SEO cost per month?
WebFX, one of the few agencies that publishes a full benchmark rather than a starting price, puts the average monthly retainer at $1,000 to $5,000 and breaks it down by company size: under $1,500 a month for micro-businesses, $1,500 to $3,500 for small businesses, $1,500 to $10,000 for mid-sized ones, $5,000 to $20,000 for large companies, and $10,000 to $50,000 or more at enterprise scale [1].
Those bands look wide until you notice what they are really measuring, which is not company size but competitive pressure. A large company is usually in a crowded market with a big site; a micro-business is usually in a thin one with a small site. The size is a proxy for the difficulty.
That also explains why the bands overlap. A mid-sized company in an uncontested niche can run a serious programme at the bottom of its range, while a small company selling something ten other well-funded companies also sell will spend at the top of a band above it and still be outworked. Before you accept any benchmark, look at who currently ranks for the terms you want. That list, not your headcount, is what you are buying your way past.

When is hourly or project pricing right?
Match the shape of the payment to the shape of the work. Hourly buys a defined answer: review this migration plan, tell me whether this proposal is reasonable, diagnose this indexing problem. Project pricing buys a finite deliverable with an end date — an audit, a replatform, a one-time cleanup. Retainers buy work that has to run every week to compound.
| Model | Published range | Right for | Wrong for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | $1,000–$5,000 / month | Ongoing programmes that compound | "Fix the site", which is a project |
| Hourly | $75–$200 / hour | A defined question or review | Running a programme |
| Project | $500–$5,000 / project | Audits, migrations, cleanups | Anything that needs repeating |
The most common and most expensive mistake is paying a retainer for what is really a project. If the brief is "fix what is broken", commission an SEO audit at a fixed fee, take the prioritised backlog, and start a retainer only when there is an ongoing plan to run.
Why is one quote three times another?
Three things, and the price of the agency's office is none of them. Competition sets how much work a result takes. Site size and complexity set how much of that work is unglamorous. And the mix inside the fee decides how much of your money pays people to make things rather than to report on things.
Regional markets change the arithmetic too. Where a search result is thin, the same outcome costs less than it would in a crowded English-language one — the reason SEO pricing in Saudi Arabia sits below the global benchmarks above, and the reason that gap narrows as those results fill up. The Saudi-specific bands are in what does SEO cost in Saudi Arabia.
What should you budget?
Start from the value of a customer rather than from a benchmark. If one new client is worth a year of fees, almost any competent programme pays for itself and the question is only which one. If your entire market searches a few dozen times a month, no retainer makes sense and the money belongs somewhere else.
Then check the floor. A month has to pay for at least one person making something, or the retainer is a monitoring subscription with a strategy deck attached.
Then decide how long you are funding it for before you judge it, and say the number out loud. Two quarters buys you a verdict on execution — whether the work shipped, on time, at the quality described. Four buys you a verdict on return. A budget approved for three months is a budget that will be cancelled in month four for failing to do something nobody expected it to do that quickly.
Our own plans and their starting prices are on the pricing page, and if you are still comparing agencies rather than budgets, how to choose an SEO agency is the better place to start. If you are pricing hourly work specifically rather than a retainer, what are SEO hourly rates breaks that figure down on its own, and our Eastern Province agency review shows what that range actually looks like on a published page.
Questions people also ask
Is there a minimum viable SEO budget?
Yes, and it is set by labour rather than by strategy. A month has to pay for at least one person making something — a writer, a developer or an outreach specialist. A budget below that funds monitoring and nothing else.
Why do agencies charge monthly rather than per result?
Because nobody controls the result. Paying per ranking would mean paying for an outcome the seller cannot deliver, which is why the arrangements that offer it are usually attached to terms nobody searches for.
Is hourly ever the right way to buy SEO?
For a defined question, yes: a migration review, a schema problem, a second opinion on a proposal. It is a poor way to run a programme, because it prices thinking and leaves nobody responsible for the outcome.
Does a bigger site always cost more?
Usually, because more URLs means more templates, more crawl issues and more pages to keep current. The exception is a large site built on one clean template, which can be cheaper to work on than a small site built badly.
