How to Get Cited by Perplexity

Perplexity cites nineteen sources per answer on average, far more than ChatGPT. Here is what its crawler needs, what it prefers, and how to check it worked.

To get cited by Perplexity, keep PerplexityBot and its live-fetch agent unblocked, publish pages that answer one question completely with a clear structure, and expect to compete for one of roughly nineteen citation slots per answer rather than four or five, which is a very different game.

That is the Perplexity-specific version of generative engine optimization; the rest of this post covers what is different about this one engine.

Why does Perplexity cite so many more sources than ChatGPT?

Because it is built as a search engine first and a chat interface second. Its whole product is organized around showing its work: an answer with a visible list of the pages it drew from, rather than a conversational reply that happens to link a source occasionally. That design choice alone explains most of the gap.

The tracking study behind this post logged Perplexity citing close to nineteen sources per answer, against roughly four and a half for ChatGPT and eight for Gemini [3]. That is not a small difference; it is closer to a different category of task. Optimizing for a four-slot answer means competing head-to-head for scarcity. Optimizing for a nineteen-slot answer means the bar to clear is "clearly relevant and well-structured," not "the single best source in existence."

19 sources per Perplexity answer

More slots also changes what "success" should look like when you measure it. A single citation here is worth less attention than a scarce ChatGPT slot would be, so the real target is a pattern across many queries over weeks, not a screenshot of one good answer. The difference in mechanics between the two engines is also part of why GEO vs SEO vs AEO treats "optimize for AI" as too coarse a goal on its own — the tactics genuinely diverge by engine.

Which crawlers do you actually have to allow?

Perplexity publishes its crawlers and their purposes directly, and the distinction between them matters in practice: one builds the index ahead of time by crawling the open web on a schedule, and a separate agent fetches a page live while it is actively answering a specific query [1]. Blocking the second one can remove you from time-sensitive answers even when your general indexing access is fine, and the reverse is also true.

This is not a theoretical risk. Hosting platforms, CDNs and bot-management products increasingly ship default rules that block anything identifying itself as an AI crawler, on the theory that most AI traffic is scraping rather than genuine retrieval on a user's behalf. That default is reasonable for a lot of bots and wrong for this one, and it produces no warning when it fires.

  1. Check robots.txt for an explicit allow

Name the crawlers directly rather than relying on a bare wildcard, since a later tightening of that wildcard is a common way sites quietly lose access.

  2. Check the edge separately from the file

CDNs and bot-management products often block AI agents by default, with no error and no visible drop in traffic, so a clean robots.txt is not proof of anything.

  3. Fetch your own key pages as the crawler

Use the documented user agent and confirm a 200 response with full HTML, not a shell page that only fills in after JavaScript runs.

  4. Re-check after any hosting or firewall change

A provider migration or a new security plugin is the single most common cause of a citation rate quietly dropping to zero.

Do this check quarterly at minimum, and immediately after any change to hosting, DNS or a security plugin. The check itself takes about ten minutes; the cost of skipping it is silent and can run for months before anyone notices the citation rate has gone flat.

Is Perplexity really different from ChatGPT and Google?

Yes, in ways that matter for what you publish and where. How ChatGPT chooses brands leans toward primary documentation and a brand's own pricing pages, treating a marketing-flavoured page as a weak source. Perplexity draws more broadly, including forums, community discussion and independent commentary, because its product is explicitly framed as a research and search tool rather than a general-purpose assistant.

The practical implication is that a comparison post, a well-structured FAQ page and a specific how-to article all have a real shot at a citation here, even without the institutional weight a primary source needs elsewhere. If your category has an active community around it — a subreddit, a forum, a Discord with public archives — that community is a live input to Perplexity's answers in a way it rarely is for getting cited by Claude, which weighs a narrower and more formal set of sources.

What page structure actually gets pulled into an answer?

One that front-loads the answer. Perplexity's own product documentation describes it as a system built to answer a question directly and show its work, which means the passage it lifts has to already look like an answer, not like the introduction to one [2].

Write each section so the first two or three sentences alone would satisfy the heading above it. Use one clear table if you are comparing options, because a structured comparison is easier to extract correctly than the same information spread across several paragraphs of prose. Date anything that could go stale, because a study or a price with no date attached is a weaker candidate than one a reader — or a retrieval system — can verify at a glance.

Avoid the temptation to pad a short, correct answer into a longer page for its own sake. A page that says less, correctly and specifically, tends to outperform a page that says more but buries the answer three paragraphs down, because the extraction step rewards the first clean passage it finds and does not keep reading past it.

Does Perplexity's Discover feed change any of this?

A little, and mostly for how you think about freshness rather than for how you write a single page. Perplexity surfaces a Discover feed of trending topics and questions alongside its core search product, which means a page that answers something people are actively asking about right now has a second route to visibility beyond a one-off query someone types in.

That is not a reason to chase every trending topic in your category, which usually produces thin, reactive content that ages badly and reads as opportunistic. It is a reason to keep a small number of genuinely evergreen pages current — updated when a price, a policy or a fact changes — so that when a related question does trend, the page a retrieval system finds is accurate rather than two years stale. Treat freshness as ongoing maintenance on a few important pages, not as a reason to publish more pages.

How do you know whether any of this worked?

Only by testing over time. Ask the twenty to forty questions a real buyer would actually type, run them on a fixed weekly schedule, and log two things each time: whether you were named, and whether your own URL specifically was one of the citations rather than a third party's page about you. How ChatGPT chooses brands covers the same measurement discipline for that engine, and the method carries over directly with no changes beyond the prompt set.

Track which of your own pages gets cited, not just whether you were cited at all. If it is always the same one page, that page is telling you what the rest of your site should look like. If it is never your own domain and always a review platform or forum thread mentioning you, that tells you where the next round of effort belongs instead of another rewrite of your homepage.

Keep the question set fixed even through a bad week. Rewriting the prompts after a disappointing run resets the one baseline the whole exercise depends on, and six months later nobody will remember what the original questions even were. Our Perplexity optimization service runs this measurement loop as a standing programme rather than a one-time check, precisely because a single good week proves nothing on its own.

أسئلة يطرحها الناس

  • How many sources does Perplexity typically cite per answer?

Around nineteen in a study tracking over thirteen thousand citations, well above ChatGPT's roughly four and a half and Gemini's roughly eight.

  • Do I need a paid Perplexity account to be crawled?

No. PerplexityBot crawls public pages the same way a search engine does, and its access has nothing to do with whether your own team uses the product.

  • Does Perplexity treat forums and Reddit like other engines do?

It leans on them more than ChatGPT does for many query types, but for business-buying questions specifically, named review and comparison sources still tend to outperform forum threads.

  • Can blocking PerplexityBot hurt me without me noticing?

Yes. A firewall or CDN rule that blocks its user agent produces no error message and no visible traffic change; the only symptom is never appearing in an answer.

  • How fast can a new page be cited?

Once it is reachable and indexed, sometimes within days, because Perplexity's retrieval layer can fetch pages closer to real time than a purely training-based model can.
